"Associate yourself with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation for 'tis better to be alone than in bad company" - George Washington

Tau Kappa Epsilon is a brotherhood of men who support each other's mental, moral, and social development. Since its founding in 1899, more than 240,000 men of good character have become members. We currently operate Chapters and Colonies on 269 college campuses across the United States and Canada, which makes us the largest college social fraternity in the world.

Members of Tau Kappa Epsilon value scholarship, character, leadership, teamwork, service, and brotherhood. We aim to make a positive difference in society, and become better people in the process.

Tau Kappa Epsilon’s Rho Chapter was founded on January 1st, 1923 by twenty seven young men who formerly called their group ‘The Avena Club’, taking parts of West Virginia University to form their name. Through the past 84 years, Rho Chapter has enjoyed 1132 brothers from every corner of the United States and several foreign countries. The chapter is active with both the International Fraternity, participating in Leadership and Rush Conferences, and the University, donating time and money to different philanthropies and competing on the intramural fields.

Tau Kappa Epsilon at West Virginia University is a great opportunity for young men to become leaders in the professional world. Education through leadership, adventures in group living, experiencing fundamentals of democracy first hand and the responsibility of participating in a student organization in conjunction with the great institution that is West Virginia University provides an abundance of good reasons to join our brotherhood.

TKE at WVU

While Greek Life at WVU is only a little more than 10% of the total population, Rho Chapter fills the void with a very large presence on campus and in the community. The chapter participates in flag football, volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, indoor soccer and basketball intramurals. Our most recent accomplishments include:
  • 2006 Grant Stetz Crowned West Virginia University Homecoming King
  • 2006 3rd Place Greek Week Competition
  • 2006 2nd Runner Ups Delta Gamma Flag Football Anchor Bowl
  • 2005 Runner Ups Delta Gamma Flag Football Anchor Bowl
  • 2005 Pan-Hellenic and IFC Homecoming Competition Champions

Philanthropy and Community Service

In 2005, Rho Chapter raised $1000 for the Monongahela County Humane Society through the 5th Annual TKE Feud Competition between the sororities at WVU. The Monongahela County Humane Society operates solely on donations and grants and is a non profit organization that rescues and shelters abandoned and abused animals in Monongahela County. The Tau Kappa Epsilon suggested charity is the Ronald Regan Alzheimer’s Foundation, and this year’s fundraising efforts will be split between the two organizations.

In addition to money donated, Rho Chapter members are very active in donating time to the community. Several times during the semester, the entire chapter donates one days worth of work to the Morgantown Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, which builds houses and sells them at a discounted price and loan rate to underprivileged families. In the past year, we have helped with the construction of three houses in the South Park area of Morgantown. Individually, brothers donate time at the local Boys and Girls Club. There, they help tutor and supervise grade school aged children and provide them with a safe place to learn and play after school.
